Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science Zambia & Drew HealthCare Limited (Rise UP!) — Ministry of Health Zambia.
The Global Health Fellows (GHF) program by Rise UP! Zambia and Charles R. Drew University (CDU-LA) global health pillar, was designed to cultivate diverse health professional leaders who are dedicated to social justice and health equity for underserved populations through outstanding education, research, clinical service, and community engagement.
The CDU GHF team is a combination of CDU interns based in Los Angeles and Zambian interns based in Lusaka and Copperbelt provinces. The program first began in February 2021.

B.S. Biomedical Sciences, CDU
Gabriela is a third year student in the B.S. Biomedical Sciences Program at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. She grew up in Long Beach, California which is a huge contributing factor to her passion for serving the underserved communities of Los Angeles. She has completed over 250 hours at St. Mary's Medical Center in Long Beach where she created innumerable unforgettable bonds with patients. In 2019, she became an undergraduate research intern with the CDU/UCLA Cancer Center Partnership to Eliminate Health Disparities, studying PARP1 and CCL2 in triple-negative breast cancer, and co-authored a scientific paper. She realized it is her personal mission to uplift and serve her own community by advocating for equality in healthcare.

Adam Daka is a Zambian national born in Mazabuka district of Southern Zambia. He is a seasoned Environmentalist specialized in promoting awareness, knowledge and development of skills for identifying and solving environmental problems. He graduated from the University of Zambia (UNZA) in 2019 with a degree in Environmental Education. Adam has held leadership roles including Executive member of the Christian Interfellowship Forum and Chairperson for UNZA Brethren in Church fellowship. He was trained in HIV prevention and couple counselling in Mazabuka. He has worked as Governance Officer at Extractive Industries Transparency Alliance, an NGO in Lusaka.

Shinece graduated from California State University, Bakersfield in 2016 with a Bachelor's in Human Biological Sciences. She is currently earning her Master's in Public Health with an emphasis on Urban Disparities at CDU. She is a research assistant for Dr. LaShonda Spencer at CDU/OASIS Clinic, an AHEC scholar, and project coordinator for Medical Careers and Project STRIDE I/II. She believes healthcare is a natural born right that should be accessible for everyone nationally and globally.
BSc Public Health, University of Lusaka
Gloria Kwambana encourages healthy living using her career and personal experience to help others overcome unhealthy living. She graduated from the University of Lusaka with a Bachelor of Science in Public Health. She joined PHEPOZ (Public Health and Environmental Promotion Organization of Zambia) in 2016, participated in WASH projects with Village Water Zambia, and volunteered during the cholera outbreak in kalinga-linga community. She interned at University Teaching Hospital (UTH) throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. She is a Global Health Leadership Intern at CDU under the Rise UP! project in Zambia.
Bachelor's Degree in Dental Surgery
Monde Lisimba was born in Mongu in the Western province of Zambia. She gained a great interest in public health and female rights. In 2016 she began volunteering with FAWEZA (Forum for African Women Educationalists in Zambia). In 2018, she co-founded Female Empowerment For Financial Independence and Local Development (FEFILD). She graduated from Voronezh State Medical University in July 2020 with a Bachelor's Degree in Dental Surgery and interned as Junior Medical Officer at Lewanika General Hospital, Mongu District Hospital and The Dental School in Lusaka.
B.S. Biomedical Sciences, CDU
Joshua Latorre is a junior at CDU majoring in B.S. Biomedical Sciences. He is part of CDU's Critical Exploration of Academic Literature (CEAL) and Urban Health Institute-Student Research Core. He serves on CDUSG's executive council as secretary. He is a certified surgical technologist at LAC+USC Medical Center specializing in trauma and orthopedic surgery. Joshua is part of the 2021 Global Health Leaders Internship under the Rise UP! CDU-Zambia program, working with CDU and Zambian interns to assess, provide, research, and educate on health dynamics of young women and adolescent girls.
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Student
Kate grew up in Staten Island, New York. She worked with peace building agencies within the United Nations. She received a BA in Speech Language Pathology from St. John's University (2008) and a BSN from Wagner College (2011). She earned her MPH from USC in 2015. In 2018, she worked with Medical Teams International on a 6-month assignment in Uganda and Bangladesh. She has worked with survivors of sexual and gender-based violence as a forensic nurse in Los Angeles County.

Iledy Njobvu was born and raised in Lusaka, Zambia. She graduated in 2019 with a bachelor's degree in nursing from Chreso University. During her studies she did practical work at University Teaching Hospital, Chilenje Level One Hospital and Saint Francis Hospital. She is passionate about serving mankind across the globe regardless of race, religion, or culture. She is currently with Charles Drew University as an intern under the Rise UP! project in Lusaka, whose main purpose is to eradicate discrimination and stigmatization among adolescents living with HIV/AIDS.

Njavwa Sichula is a Zambian national born in Ndola. He is a passionate Development specialist with experience in health outcomes. He received his BA in Development Studies in 2019 from University of Lusaka. He held leadership roles including president of the Development Studies Association of UNILUS and Secretary General of the Lions Club. He has certificates in Monitoring and Evaluation (FHI 360) and Agri-preneurship (YALI). He has worked for Clinton Health Access Initiative and Smollan Zambia. He is passionate about equity and equality in accessing good health for all.

Shauntel Winston is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at CDU and the prelicensure nursing program at Los Angeles Southwest College. She is a pediatric Licensed Vocational Nurse committed to helping others thrive and advancing peace by closing the gaps of racial and ethnic disparities in her community and globally. She assisted in providing healthcare services in deep rural communities and addressed sudden cardiac death amongst adolescent athletes. She aims to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and one day travel abroad transforming healthcare for children.

Brian is a final year student at Levy Mwanawasa Medical University pursuing Bachelor's of Science Public Health. He was born in Ndola, Copperbelt Province. He has been involved in HIV treatment and prevention at the Ministry of Health of Zambia, CIDRZ and CDC-CoAg. He realized his clinical field was more biased to therapeutic treatment and felt more should be done on prevention, so he pursued Public Health to emphasize disease burden prevention measures.

Morreah Champo pursued her Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Sciences at the Copperbelt University School of Medicine. She has an ardent passion for laboratory diagnosis of organisms and their ability to evoke diseases. She hopes to specialize in Infectious Diseases or Clinical Microbiology. An internship with CDU-GHL will be a valuable addition to her scientific aspirations as well as personal development.

Bristol is a Public Health Epidemiology student at the University of Zambia. He is an adventurous autodidact who loves to learn and discover new skills. He is also enrolled in a postgraduate Monitoring and Evaluation program. Bristol has a special passion for music and art. As a long term goal, he is determined to build a firm background and experience in the field of public health research.

Blessed Chishimba is a final year student at Levy Mwanawasa Medical University pursuing a Diploma in Clinical Medicine Psychiatry. She obtained a certificate in HIV/AIDS management treatment and is enrolled in a Psychosocial counseling program at Levy. Her passion has been helping vulnerable groups such as young girls and boys, the mentally challenged, and women. She believes there is no health without mental health. She wishes to open friendly centres dealing with mental health, counseling and awareness.

Barbara is a confident and goal-oriented person. She is currently pursuing a Nursing diploma at Ndola School of Nursing and Midwifery. She wishes to further her studies and branch off into a specialty, and become the ED of her own Organization that looks at the wellness of Teen Moms. Her hobbies include singing, makeup artistry, traveling, and making new friends. She is confident that the CDU Rise UP! project will fully equip her with exposure, leadership and management.

Inez is a California girl, born and raised. She practiced respiratory therapy for 26 years and worked the front-lines through the pandemic. She made the jump into the Masters of Science in Physician Assistant program at CDU to grow and contribute more. She is preparing to offer greater help to the medical community both in the United States and wherever she may travel. She came to CDU because they are in the heart of a city in immense need of medical help.

Narkie is a first-generation Ghanaian-American from the Crenshaw District of Los Angeles. She received her B.A in Child and Adolescent Development: Applied Science from Cal State Northridge. She is a creative entrepreneur. Her future goals include having a global non-profit merging fashion and healthcare to organize freedom and strategy for the youth in Ghana and South Central.

Iman Miller is 24, a mother of one, and resides in Los Angeles, CA. She is enrolled in the Bachelor's of Science Public Health program at CDU. After completion, she plans to apply to the ELM program (Entry-Level Master of Science in Nursing) at CDU. Her long term goal is to become a Registered Nurse in OBGYN and pediatrics. She enjoys spending quality time with her daughter, family, and friends, concerts, amusement parks, and traveling.

Francess was born in Lagos, Nigeria and raised in Los Angeles. She graduated from UC Berkeley with a Bachelor's in Public Health and a minor in Global Poverty and Practice. As an aspiring psychiatrist and public health professional, she has pursued endeavors in mental health, community health, global health, and maternal & child health. She looks forward to supporting the Rise UP! Project to improve clinical and psychosocial outcomes for HIV-positive young women in Zambia.

Princelawrenz Hamlin is a 20 year old Sophomore at CDU. He was born in Lancaster, California and raised in Palmdale. Ten years from now, he sees himself saving lives as a cardiologist and leading a team of medical professionals with an "each one, reach one" philosophy to close the health gap in impoverished and underserved communities, working towards bringing an end to heart disease. He maintains a 4.0 GPA and participates in activities that refine his leadership capabilities.
